Not every tired lawn needs a full tear-out. Sun exposure, soil depth and how much of the turf is still viable decide whether you overseed, patch or strip and re-sod. Below are the turf types and renovation methods we use across Peel and Halton, and where each one makes sense.
Most popularThe standard Ontario nursery sod — a dense, deep-green blend of bluegrass cultivars grown on mineral soil. It knits together with underground rhizomes, so it self-repairs from wear and gives that uniform front-lawn look. Wants at least six hours of sun and regular water.
Shaded yardsBluegrass blended with fine and tall fescues that tolerate four to five hours of filtered light. Finer bladed and deeper rooted, so it holds colour better under mature maples and along north-facing sides where standard sod thins out within a season.
Low maintenanceA fine fescue dominant blend that grows slower and shorter, cutting mowing roughly in half and needing far less water and fertilizer once established. Soft, slightly informal texture — great for large open yards and cottage-style properties, less so for heavy play traffic.
Large areasInstead of hand-laying 2 ft x 5 ft slabs, wide rolls are machine-laid across open lawns. Far fewer seams means faster establishment, straighter lines and less risk of edges drying out — the right call once an area runs past a few thousand square feet.
Renovation, not replacementIf roughly half the lawn is still healthy, we pull soil cores to relieve compaction, topdress with a sand-loam blend and overseed with a matched cultivar. Cheaper than sod and it builds deeper roots — best done late August through September while soil is still warm.
Full resetFor lawns lost to grubs, chinch, construction or hard clay: old turf is cut and hauled, the grade is corrected away from the house, and 3–4" of fresh screened soil goes down before new sod. It is the most involved option and the only one that fixes drainage and levelling for good.
